Last winter I knocked your socks off with my quick and easy DIY peppermint soap that you can whip up in under 10 minutes (it makes a perfect holiday gift idea for friends and neighbors!), and this year I thought I’d try my hand at making a DIY pumpkin spice soap for fall…and it turned out even better than I expected! It has all of the wonderful scents of autumn wrapped up into one tiny little package!

Supplies for Pumpkin Spice Soap

What You’ll Need:

DIY Watermelon Soap mixing intervals instructionsI use about 1 lb (or half of the block) of soap base at a time which makes four large 4-ounce soaps. The block of shea butter soap base is smooth and silky, and it cuts easily with a kitchen knife. I slice the soap base into cubes, place them inside a 4-cup Pyrex measuring cup, and melt in the microwave in 20-30 second increments, stirring well after each microwave session to ensure that the soap is completely melted. For 1 lb of soap, I generally microwave for 30 seconds, stir, microwave for another 30 seconds, stir again, and microwave a final time for 20 seconds.

When the soap is completely melted, stir in 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice and a few drops of red and yellow soap colorant. I added 2 drops of red and 4 drops of yellow color to my soap because I wanted it to have a subtle color instead of being bright orange. If you prefer a brighter orange, just add more colorant until you reach the desired shade. No need to worry about the color coming off on your body in the shower since the colorant is designed specifically for this purpose. Pour the melted soap into the soap mold, and allow to sit undisturbed until cool (about 30 minutes or so). Remove & enjoy!   DIY Pumpkin Spice Soap TutorialI’m thinking that these soaps would also make great gifts for teachers (you can never have too much soap in a classroom, right?), and they would also make an awesome fundraiser or craft fair item.

  1. This is awesome! Did this today with my clients and it turned out great! Can’t wait to try the peppermint! A lot of the spice moved to the bottom and made it much darker. Did I do something wrong?

    1. Hi Rebekah! Sometimes soap additives can settle to the bottom if you’re not using a soap base that is called a “suspension base.” The specific shea butter soap base that I recommend in the post is a suspension base, but there are many others that are not. It is typical for additives to settle like you described in a non-suspension soap base. I’m sure that it still smells wonderful though! 🙂

      1. I made this soap tonight and followed your instructions. I did have orange coloring and used a slight amount. When I added the 2 Tablespoons of Pumpkin Pie Spice it turned the soap brown. What happened?

      2. Oh no! Different brands of spices perhaps? So sorry it wasn’t the color you were expecting (but I bet it still smells wonderful!).

  2. This sounds just like what I’ve been looking for. I’m opening a little shop in NY and would like to hand these out to my guest at the grand opening!

  3. Sounds like a great soap – I’m going to try it with the spice! Shouldn’t you wrap all melt & pour soaps in plastic to protect them? The glycerin comes to the surface, especially if it’s humid and the soap gets kind of sticky. Also, I get all my soap at Michael’s using their 40% off coupons, there’s usually one in the weekly Sunday paper or you can find it online to print, (retailmenot.com). I have the retailmenot app on my phone and just show my phone at the register. I love getting the big bucket of clear soap that’s $40. – for only $24!

    1. Great tips on the coupon app, Margie, thanks! I have never had any issues with the shea butter soap getting sticky when wrapped in paper, but we generally use ours rather quickly (within 6 months at most), so perhaps that is why we haven’t run into it. I think that wrapping them in plastic would be a great idea though, especially if you’re planning on storing them for longer periods of time. 🙂

    2. Hi Margie,

Have you had a good experience with the ArtMinds soap base that Michael’s sells? I’m thinking of getting the shea butter soap base and there’s also a 50% off coupon right now.

Please let me know! I’m making small holiday gifts (soaps and scrubs). Also have you used their colorants?

      Thanks,
      Ayesha

    1. Hi Mary Anne, the soap molds are available at craft stores such as Joann’s & Hobby Lobby, or you can buy one via Amazon as well (CLICK HERE).

    1. Thanks, Karen! I hope yours turns out great! I used simple strips of patterned paper to wrap my bars, but I’ve also used grosgrain ribbons and fabric scraps. 🙂

  4. I super LOVE LOVE LOVE this – this looks like such a blast to make + an awesome gift to give! Totally pinning this as I have never made soap but this looks like I could do it – thanks!

    1. I have seen the colorant at Michael’s and Hobby Lobby. I’ve never looked for it at Joann’s, but they may have it there, too! 🙂

    1. I still have some of the peppermint soap that I made last year around Christmas time, and it hasn’t lost any of its fragrance or changed at all. I would definitely say that you’re safe making it now for Christmas! 🙂
