How to Easily Paint a Couch for Under $20

Lately I’ve seen painted sofas, couches, loveseats and chairs of all sorts popping up on Pinterest. My imagination was sparked, and I knew immediately that I wanted to attempt to paint a dingy old Ikea loveseat that had previously lived in my boys’ playroom. We’re re-doing our entry room (hence the concrete floors and ripped off baseboards in the photos below!), and I wanted to give the sofa a new home there. I was intrigued by the idea of using chalk paint to give my loveseat a makeover, but I also didn’t want to spend a lot of money buying expensive supplies that I didn’t already have on hand, so I came up with another plan.

Ikea Sofa Before Painting

I started with this cream colored loveseat from Ikea. I had always intended on getting a slipcover made for it…until I discovered that they cost around $250! Like I said, it used to hang out in the boys’ play room, so even though it looked okay from a distance, it was a dingy mess up close.

Dirty Dingy Couch BeforeSee what I mean? This photo doesn’t even show how bad it actually looked in person. It was covered with loads of dirty spots and a few lovely splashes of green highlighter (thanks, Simon!) and marker.

Behr Emerald Lake Paint for Painted CouchI literally had a dream about painting the couch an emerald green, but during the following weeks I went through TONS of paint chips, and could never find a color that was just right. Last week my husband was cleaning out the garage and ran across some old cans of paint that a neighbor had given to us awhile back. Lo and behold, in the stack was a can of “Emerald Lake” paint that was JUST what I was looking for! Seriously, I opened that can of paint and gasped out loud – it was like I opened the can and heard angels singing a chorus of Hallelujah! Exactly the shade I was looking for! Unfortunately, that can of paint was a high gloss exterior paint, so I took the formula down to Home Depot and had them color match it in an interior satin.

Mix of Paint for Painting a CouchI mixed the quart of paint with 16 ounces of fabric textile medium. This allows the latex paint to permanently bond to the fabric while staying softer, less stiff and resistant to cracking. You can pick up the fabric medium at most craft stores – be sure to use your weekly coupon! You will need two 8 oz bottles of fabric medium for every quart of paint used.

painting a white loveseat sofa greenStart by spraying a section of the sofa with water and allowing it to penetrate the fabric. I sprayed my loveseat a section at a time and allowed it to sit for about five minutes before painting. I used a 3″ foam brush which worked perfectly on the canvas-like fabric, but if your couch has a looser weave or more textured fabric you will probably do better with a regular paintbrush (I’d recommend this Purdy brush – they’re pricey, but they last forever!). As soon as I painted this little swatch I fell in love with it!

Painting a CouchContinue to alternate spraying the couch and working section by section until the entire piece is painted. Pay attention to your brush strokes, and paint with the grain of the fabric.

Painted Sofa After One CoatAfter the first coat – it definitely needed a second coat to provide more even and solid coverage, but I was already thrilled with the way it was shaping up! The process was a LOT quicker than I thought it would be too! It took about an hour and fifteen minutes to paint the first coat, and then I left it to dry completely overnight before adding a second coat.

Painted Ikea Loveseat Sofa CouchAfter a second coat it was smooth and gorgeous!  Any color variation that you can see in the photos is just from shadowing and sunlight in the room.

How to Paint an Ikea CouchI can’t believe this is the same sofa!

Before and After Painted SofaIt seriously looks a thousand times better than it did before! I’m sort of giddy that I rescued it from the To-Be-Donated pile and gave it new life!

Painted Ikea CouchI tested it out and rubbed the entire loveseat vigorously with a piece of white fabric, and there is NO paint transfer! I won’t lie and pretend that this is going to be the comfiest couch ever. It feels just like what it is, painted canvas, but I’ve read that over time it will soften up a bit. It can also be sanded lightly with a fine grit sandpaper to add more softness to it, but since this loveseat isn’t one that we sit on very often, it will work perfectly for us.

UPDATE: The sofa is still going strong after nearly 8 months of daily use! Come check out how awesome it looks in our newly made over front entry room!

  1. Hello, I was wondering if you have to spray the couch again when you are applying the 2nd coat. Thanks so much!

    1. Hi Tracy! You do not have to spray the sofa with water before painting the second coat. Just straight from the can! 🙂

  2. Do you know what works best on a ivory recliner. It’s leather and looks quite dinghy but so comfy and sturdy. And input would be greatly appreciated! This little loveseat turned out darling!

    1. I have never tried it myself, but I have heard that latex paint works well on leather as well, or there is also a spray-on vinyl paint that is meant to be used for autos that may work, too!

    2. there is a special paint for leather that is amazing. it is called Angeles Paint. you can buy it online. i have a line of shoes and accessories painted with this paint. it is THE BEST. it doesn’t chip or crack like other paints. i actually painted my old loveseat and chair with it. it takes 2 coats, but it is extremely durable. like the paint heidi used, it gets softer over time. its not expensive and well worth it!!!

      1. Thanks so much for the info, Anji! I’m going to have to check that out myself for a chair I’m looking to make over! 🙂

  3. WOW!! I am so going to have to try this. I have 2 couches that don’t match and have covers that so have seen better days! Perhaps now I can just paint them both the same color!!

  4. we have the exact sofa in our 3 year old’s room & have been searching for an affordable makeover! thanks for the awesome post!

  5. Hi Heidi
We have the exact same couch and it is horrible stained and cover just doesn’t stay put. I had two questions…1) why did you spray with water first? 2) do you think adding more fabric medium would make it less stiff? We sit on our regularly. Oh, OK 3 questions 🙂 Do you think taping to add a design or using stensil would work on fabric or would it just blead under?

    1. Hi Shelly!

      1) I sprayed it with water because that’s what I read to do when I was looking at other painted furniture tutorials lol! Since you never actually dip your brush into water, it helps the paint to spread more easily and blend better if the couch is slightly damp.

      2) I’m not sure if more fabric medium would make it less stiff or not. The directions say to mix it at a specific ratio, so I mixed mine according to the package directions.

      3) I had initially wanted to paint stripes on the couch, but I was also worried it would bleed under the tape, especially on a damp sofa….BUT, honestly, once I started painting I was surprised at how nicely it went since the couch is very much like a blank canvas. I do think that a taped or stenciled design would work, but I would probably use less water on those areas just to ensure that the tape would adhere properly.

      Hope that helps! 🙂

      1. Thanks Heidi! It might be a while before I do it but I would love to share my pic when I’m done.

      2. So I have not done it yet 🙂 lol trying to decide on a color. Ours is pretty stained too. I was also wondering how does it hold up to cleaning? I can’t keep the dogs off it or kids spilling my drinks on it 🙂

  6. I noticed that the fabric medium comes in different colors at the store. How did you know to go with the shade that you did?

    1. They only had one version at my craft store, so that’s what I went with. I honestly didn’t even realize that it came in different colors! The one that I used looks white when it’s wet, but it dries clear so that it doesn’t affect the color of the paint at all.

  7. wow! I have that same couch and would love to paint it, but i’m open to the slip cover only i don’t know the name of the couch. can you help?

  8. Hi !! I love your idea and I want it try it but … I was wondering if the after you painted it !! The couch still have a strong smell of the paint!! Or it’s not smell at all! 🙂

  9. I love the colour. I have a chair I’m thinking of doing. In one of your comments you mention being crunchy. What’s that about? Does the fabric get crunchy? Also the chair I’m thinking of doing has a texture. Is that a problem?

    1. Hi Heather! I’m not sure that crunchy is really the appropriate word for it (I was just using the same word that the commenter above me used). It’s really more “stiff” than “crunchy.” The couch feels exactly like what it is – painted canvas. It’s stiff, but not uncomfortable. The paint is smooth and the addition of the fabric medium makes it flexible so that it won’t crack or peel. I haven’t attempted to paint anything with a texture myself, but I have heard that you can still see pattern or heavy texture through the paint (you will see the texture, but not the previous color). Hope that helps! 🙂

  10. absolutely KILLER makeover! I love the color so much and painting furniture can be such a savior for that piece! Turned out awesome and it’s making me want to paint another piece myself!

    1. Thanks, Ashley! I’m seriously in love with it too! It’s super addictive…I have about three more pieces that I want to paint now! 🙂

  11. I’ve been totally looking forward to this post since I saw your teaser pic on Instagram. I LOVE this sofa. I’d buy this sofa just as it is!

My couch is the best sofa ever but I want to mix up my decor. Not sure if I’m going to go through with it because of the whole crunchy thing but I’m really, really considering it. After all, I’ve always wanted a purple couch and now I can have one that is the perfect shade 🙂

    1. Thanks, Allison! I’m seriously loving the way it turned out! We also have the world’s most hideous (think orange and green stripes!) yet most comfortable recliner, and my husband wants me to try to paint it now too. I think I’m going to attempt the chalk paint on the chair since it has a heavy pattern that I want to try to hide, so I’ll keep you posted if it’s any less crunchy! 🙂

      1. Heidi, did you try and paint this recliner with the chalk paint yet? How were the results!? Thanks!

  12. I am so excited to try painting my chair and ottoman. Been wanting to get rid of it or recover but didnt want to spend $ 🙂 i’ll let u know what happens!!!

  13. Did it only take one quart of paint for this couch? I have the exact same one that I’ve been looking to update for our front entry way room too.

    1. Hi Christine, I put two coats of paint on the couch, and it used almost exactly one quart (plus two 8 oz bottles of fabric medium). I’d say that there’s maybe 6-8 oz of paint left in the can. 🙂

  14. Our couch is a hand-me-down ugly thing, but we use it, obviously. I wonder what my hubby would say if I painted it. Lol. Might be a bit crunchy, but we already keep a quilt on it.

  15. How long has it been since you have painted the sofa? I wondered if it softened up any more. We inherited my mother-in-law’s living room furniture. It is the absolute most comfortable sofa and loveseat I have ever sat on, but, the design is not something I would ever be able to use. It is in the basement playroom right now. The furniture that we use upstairs looks nice, but it’s not comfortable. We use it daily. Just considering painting it. Yours looks great!

    1. I only painted it a week ago, Kellye, so it hasn’t really softened up yet. We don’t really use the loveseat since it’s in our front entry room, so for us it was just a matter of making it look better to salvage the piece. It may take us a while to break it in since we don’t sit on it very often at all! 🙂

      1. Absolutely! It now feels more like vinyl or leather, and it isn’t nearly as stiff as when it was first painted!

      2. Great job! Just wondering how the paint is holding up, are you having any peeling or anything like that? I’m thinking to do the same with my white Ikea dining chairs.

      3. It’s held up incredibly well! No flaking, chipping, cracking or peeling at all. Honestly, it really does look just as good as the day that I painted it!

  16. Holy cow, what a difference! That came out beautifully! The color is perfect, I love it! I’ve heard about this and even thought about trying it on a stained upholstered chair that I have and love. You got me thinking about it again!
