Does your neighborhood Boo each other? It’s one of our favorite traditions!
I had always dreamed of living in a neighborhood that participates in “Booing” at Halloween, so I was beyond excited to find a pumpkin-shaped basket full of Halloween treats on our doorstep one October morning. A note alongside the goodies read, “You’ve Been Booed!” It was our very first Boo experience in our new home, and the kids were thrilled (to say the least!)!
Since then, Booing our neighbors has become a cherished Halloween tradition along with swapping our favorite printable Halloween games (a great, FREE Boo basket addition!).
This year, I’ve added a personal touch by designing my own “You’ve Been Booed” printable signs to help spread the fun. We’re excited to see how far our Boo signs will travel through the neighborhood and beyond, and we can’t wait to spot them hanging up on windows and doors. We hope you’ll join in the fun, too!
What Does It Mean to Boo Someone?
Booing is a fun and relatively new tradition in which neighbors secretly and anonymously leave baskets of Halloween treats and goodies on each other’s doorsteps in the weeks leading up to Halloween. It’s a really great way to spread kindness and Halloween spirit throughout your neighborhood and community!

You’ve Been Booed! What’s Next?
How to Boo Your Neighbors for Halloween
Booing your friends and neighbors is as easy as 1-2-3!
- Step 1 – If you’ve received a Boo basket on your doorstep, it probably came with a set of “You’ve Been Booed” signs. Display the “We’ve Been Booed” sign on your front window or door to let your neighbors know you’ve already been Booed.
- Step 2 – Within two days, print out two additional “You’ve Been Booed” signs (get the free printables below!), and prepare two new Halloween treat baskets or bags.
- Step 3 – Under the cover of darkness, deliver the Boo baskets and signs to two other houses in your neighborhood that haven’t been Booed yet. Place the basket of treats on the front door step or porch of the person you’re Booing. (You can even ring the doorbell once and “doorbell ditch” if you feel like it is respectful and appropriate among your neighborhood or group of friends.)
Note: Be mindful of doorbell cameras and try to keep your identity hidden – part of the fun is guessing who did the Booing!
If you’re kicking off the Booing in your neighborhood, skip Step 1 and move on to Step 2!
Note: Asking each home to deliver two baskets of treats vs one basket better ensures that the chain of paying-it-forward will not be broken, and the Halloween fun will continue to spread throughout your neighborhood!
My kids are always SO excited to sneak around the neighborhood after dark to deliver our treats to unsuspecting friends! The best part is watching how far the Boo spreads up and down the street, around the block, and over to neighboring areas.
Soon, you’ll start to see “We’ve Been Booed” signs popping up on every window and door, and the kids will be eagerly chatting with one another, trying to guess who Booed whom. It’s so much fun!

Boo Basket Filler Ideas
Traditionally, Boo baskets contain an assortment of Halloween candy or sweet treats along with inexpensive Halloween novelty toys or party favors (Dollar Tree always has a great variety of Boo basket fillers, and I also like the Target Dollar Spot for small treats and fun toys), but your Boo basket can be as simple or elaborate as you make it!

We often like to include homemade treats in our Boo buckets as well, so I always make sure to send a quick text or message to the adults of the household letting them know that their Boo basket was from someone they trust so that they know it’s safe to eat!
Don’t forget to add the printable You’ve Been Booed signs to your basket!
